Pair of bronze sculptures depicting horses
The two bronzes are replicas of the celebrated marbles by Guillaume Coustou, which were initially commissioned for the gardens at the Chateau de Marly in 1739. Each horse with a trainer is trying to restrain his rearing horse on a naturalistic basis.
Coustou’s famed rearing horses restrained by grooms were among the most important sculptures created in the 18th century. They were recreated in various sizes and materials throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century.
These statues are in antimony, with dark brown patina in imitation of bronze, the base is in black Belgian marble.
