Portrait of a Young Woman in Profile

Price on request

A refined female portrait in profile, executed in oil on canvas by a painter active between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whose signature — “P.A. Poli” — has not yet been conclusively linked to a documented name, although it reveals in every detail the assured hand and solid training of an academically schooled artist.

Description

The work belongs to the genre of the tête d’étude — the “head study” — highly fashionable in turn-of-the-century Europe: an anonymous female subject, captured in a moment of intimate contemplation, becomes a pretext for a genuine exercise in pure painting, appreciated both in academic circles and among bourgeois collectors of the period, in keeping with the great nineteenth-century tradition of the psychological portrait.

The young woman is portrayed in perfect profile, her head slightly bowed and her gaze lowered, in a pensive, reserved expression that lends the image an almost intimate intensity. Her dark hair, gathered in a soft, gently loosened style, frames a luminous complexion enlivened by delicate rosy passages on the cheeks: it is this — the face — that constitutes the most finished and “precious” part of the composition, built up through subtle glazes and tonal control of remarkable sensitivity.

By deliberate contrast, the background and pale garment are rendered with broad, confident, almost alla-prima brushstrokes, in a pictorial shorthand that intentionally allows the weave of the canvas to show through. This contrast between the finish of the face and the freer, almost sketch-like treatment of the background is characteristic of late nineteenth-century academic portraiture, poised between traditional draftsmanly rigor and the freer, post-Macchiaioli execution that was renewing Italian figure painting in those same decades.

Frame and signature

The work retains its original frame, in gilded wood finely carved with continuous foliate motifs, which enhances its period character and completes the presentation harmoniously, adding a further element of authenticity and value to the piece as a whole.

Conservation Note

The painting is in generally good condition, with the signature fully legible and the paint surface substantially intact. However, a slight, localized lifting of the paint layer and some craquelure related to the natural aging of the canvas are present, for which — while not an urgent matter — a light conservation restoration (consolidation and cleaning) is recommended to ensure the work’s long-term stability. This minimal intervention would in no way affect the painting’s authenticity or historical and artistic value, but would help guarantee its optimal preservation over time.

Notes for Collectors

A painting of undeniable decorative appeal and notable painterly quality, ideal for classic or eclectic interiors, equally at home among antique furnishings or in contemporary spaces seeking an “old master” accent. The combination of a refined subject, confident execution, and a period frame makes it a piece of genuine interest for collectors of nineteenth-century portraiture, even in the absence — for now — of a firm attribution of authorship.
